Dr Robert Haldane is an author and historian based at Buchan in East Gippsland, Victoria, Australia. He served in the Victoria Police Force for almost thirty-four years, retiring at the rank of Superintendent in August 2001. In addition to extensive operational experience as a uniformed officer and detective, his police career included positions as a staff officer, industrial relations officer, research officer and editor of the Victoria Police newsmagazine Police Life.

In 1990 he was awarded a Chief Commissioner’s Certificate for ‘outstanding leadership’; in 1997 he completed the International Police Executive Officers’ Course; and in 1998 he was awarded an Australian Police Medal for ‘distinguished police service’.

He holds the degrees Doctor of Philosophy and Bachelor of Arts (Honours) from La Trobe University and is a graduate of the Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy (USA). He is also a Fellow of the HRH Duke of Edinburgh Study Conference (1986) and the Gippsland Community Leadership Program (1996).

A contributor to the Age Good Food Guide since 2001, he is also a regular contributor to Gippsland Country Life magazine and is author of the official history of the Victoria Police, titled The People’s Force, first published in 1986. An occasional public speaker, commentator and author on a range of police and historical topics, he is a keen Gippsland regional historian and is an Associate of the Gippsland Heritage Journal.

During 2005-2008 he served as Deputy Mayor and Councillor on the East Gippsland Shire Council. His other community interests have included membership of the Buchan Cemetery Trust; the Gippsland Coastal Board; the Sustainable Gippsland Advisory Committee; and the Gippsland Area Consultative Committee. In the past he has been Coordinator of the East Gippsland Vocational Education Program Inc; inaugural Chairperson of the Gippsland East Local Learning and Employment Network; and Chairperson of the East Gippsland Shire Council Audit Committee. He is a Past-President of the Buchan Primary School Council; Buchan Bush Nursing Centre Committee of Management; and Gippsland Community Leadership Program Alumni.
